회원 여러분께 기쁜 소식을 전해드립니다. 

한국인도학회 회장을 역임하신 이거룡 교수님께서 인도 정부가 수여하는 요가 분야 최고 권위의 상인 '총리 요가상(Prime Minister’s Awards for Yoga)' 국제 개인 부문 수상자로 선정되셨습니다.

이 교수님께서는 2025년 12월 20일 인도 뉴델리 프라가티 마이단(Pragati Maidan)에서 개최된 ‘제2회 WHO 글로벌 전통의학 서밋(2nd WHO Global Summit on Traditional Medicine)’에서 나렌드라 모디(Narendra Modi) 인도 총리로부터 직접 상을 수여받으셨습니다.

 ‘총리 요가상’은  모디 총리가 2016년 제2회 세계 요가의 날을 기념하여 제정한 상으로, 요가의 진흥과 세계적 확산에 크게 기여한 개인이나 기관을 기리기 위해 마련되었습니다. 본 상은 매년 국제 부문과 국내 부문으로 나누어 수여되고 있습니다.

이 교수님께서는 요가에 대한 학문적 연구와 국제적 보급에 기여한 공로를 인정받아 외국 출신 개인으로서 국제 개인 부문 수상자로 선정되셨습니다. 국제 개인 부문에서는 2019년 이탈리아의 안토니에타 로지(Antonietta Rozzi)가 첫 수상자로 선정된 바 있으며, 이 교수님은 2024년 수상자에 해당합니다. 수상자에게는 트로피와 상장, 그리고 상금 250만 루피(Rs. 25 lakh, 약 3만 달러)가 수여됩니다.

이 교수님께서는 앞서 2019년 인도 외무부 산하 인도문화교류위원회(ICCR, Indian Council for Cultural Relations)가 수여하는 ‘ICCR Distinguished Indologist Award’를 세계에서 네 번째로 수상하신 바 있습니다. 해당 상이 인도 국적이 아닌 해외 인도학·인도철학 연구자에게 수여되는 최고 영예의 상이라면, 이번 ‘총리 요가상’은 외국인이 요가 분야에서 받을 수 있는 최고 권위의 상으로 평가되고 있습니다.

Greetings.

We are pleased to announce that Professor Lee, Geo-Lyong, who previously served as President of the Korean Society for Indian Studies, has been selected as the recipient of the International Individual Award of the Prime Minister’s Awards for Yoga, the highest honor bestowed by the Government of India in the field of yoga.

Professor Lee received the award directly from the Honorable Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, at the 2nd WHO Global Summit on Traditional Medicine, held on December 20, 2025, at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi, India.

The Prime Minister’s Awards for Yoga were instituted in 2016 by Prime Minister Modi to commemorate the second International Day of Yoga, with the aim of honoring individuals and institutions that have made outstanding contributions to the promotion and global dissemination of yoga. The awards are presented annually in both international and domestic categories.

Professor Lee was selected as the International Individual Award recipient in recognition of his distinguished contributions to the academic study of yoga and its international dissemination as a non-Indian scholar. In the International Individual category, the first recipient was Antonietta Rozzi of Italy in 2019, and Professor Lee is the recipient for the year 2024. Award recipients are presented with a trophy, a certificate, and a prize of 2.5 million Indian rupees (Rs. 25 lakh, approximately USD 30,000).

Previously, in 2019, Professor Lee was also awarded the ICCR Distinguished Indologist Award by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), an organization under the Ministry of External Affairs of India, becoming the fourth recipient worldwide. While the ICCR award is regarded as the highest honor granted to non-Indian scholars in the fields of Indology and Indian philosophy, the Prime Minister’s Awards for Yoga are considered the most prestigious distinction that a foreign national can receive in the field of yoga.
